Limousine Bull Project Space
I am currently studying for my MFA in Curatorial Practice at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen. As part of my research for this, I am hoping to undertake a series of workshops and events with the general public. My subject of interest is about how people engage with the built environment around them. My work is an attempt to get people thinking about the areas they live and what they perhaps overlook and dismiss as they go about their daily business.
My project will consist of one walk and one afternoon workshop.
The Walk – The walk will start at Castlegate at the Mercat Cross. Here I will ask people to try a drawing task. I will split the group into 6, and place around the sections of the Mercat Cross. I will give everyone a piece of paper and pencil and ask them to draw what they see….a simple 5 minute sketch. I will then swap them over, so they have a different view and get them to repeat the same task. We will then go on a walk, having given out disposable cameras to a few of the group, and encourage them to take pictures of interesting things about the city or scenes from unusual perspectives. I will be pointing out some interesting things along the way, and try to promote discussion about peoples favourite places or things they know about the city. The walk will draw to a close I think on top of the St. Nicholas Centre, where I will ask participants to try to draw from memory the first sketch they did.
The Workshop – To be held in the project space at Limousine Bull. The workshop will have three elements. The first is a display of the photographs that people took on the walk. The next will be a display of the sketches, as a compare and contrast. The idea is to initially see what information people record, the second is to see how different people draw different things…even of the same view. The third is to compare what features people remember when trying to remember. The last element will be an organic interaction display. I will pin up some images with blue tack (so they are easily moved). I will invite people to bring images of their own favourite places, and try to promote information sharing and story telling by giving people post it notes to place up on the display with their comments.
