Open view: 18 August

john dummettFor the next 4 weeks, international artist, John Dummett will be working in Aberdeen on his highly decorative sculptures which contribute to the debate concerning social cohesion and integration.

The project is run by Limousine Bull Artist’s Collective as part of their ongoing residency programmes.  John is currently working in their gallery space where the final public exhibition will take place on Saturday the 18th August.

The work is flamboyant, large, intriguing and thought provoking.  Four life-size human figures adorned with wreaths, flags, streamers, graffiti and plastic flowers symbolise the paraphernalia of street celebration, protest and remembrance.  Three of the figures will be crouching and pulling the carriage in which the fourth figure stands.  Words written into the wreaths are a selection of statements and phrases gleaned from the debate on social cohesion.  The sculptures ask the audience to consider the contradictions and political ambiguity surrounding the debate.

John said, “I want my art to be generous and emotive.  I use all different kinds of materials from plastic flowers to flags to bunting.  The work is smothered in decoration.  It’s almost like a visual overload which will hopefully stimulate and engage the viewer”.

“John has also worked and exhibited in Germany, Portugal, Ireland, Canada, Holland, Norway, Croatia and Australia,” said Matt Wickham, Project Manager for Limousine Bull, “so we are delighted that he is working here with us in Aberdeen. We hope to have a very good turn out at the opening.” This will be on Saturday, 18th August, between 12 noon and 5 pm.  All are welcome.  The show is on until the 22nd for those who can’t make the initial launch.
